Now it’s official: Erich A. Nigg will become the new head of the Biozentrum. He has also been elected by the University Council to become the new Professor for Cell Biology.
| Prof. Erich A. Nigg |
Prof. Erich A. Nigg, who is currently the Director of the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Martinsried, near Munich, is the newly appointed Director of the Biozentrum. He will take office as of February 1st, 2009 taking over from Prof. Joachim Seelig who is resigning from the position of Chairman. As the new Professor Ordinarius for Cell Biology Erich Nigg will succeed Prof. Walter Gehring.
Born in 1952 in Uster, Zurich, Erich Nigg studied biochemistry and microbiology at the ETH in Zurich completing his studies with his doctoral dissertation in 1980. Following two years of Postdoctoral work at the University of California in Dan Diego, he returned to become Assistant Professor and Lecturer at the Institute of Cell Biology at the ETH, Zurich. From 1987 until 1995, he was involved in research at the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research in Epalinges, Vaud, before he was appointed Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology at the University of Geneva, in 1995. In 1997, he was chosen to become a Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society, and since 1999, has been holding the position of Director of the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried. Erich Nigg is married and father of two adult children.
In his research, Prof. Nigg is investigating the mechanisms of cell cycle regulation with major interests in cell division (mitosis) and centrosome function, as well as the role of cell cycle deregulation (genome instability) in cancer development. He has been awarded many prizes for his scientific research and is a member of various scientific societies.
Erich Nigg is looking forward to taking an active role in the future development of the Biozentrum. Within the institute, he aims to support the teaching and research activities of the individual research groups as well as to enhance the synergic interactions between the groups and to establish institute-wide technology platforms. Furthermore, he aims to promote new emphases through appointments for future positions. Additional to the internal plans for the Biozentrum, Erich Nigg wants to utilize the present atmosphere of change to deepen the collaboration with other research institutes located in Basel and the region, particularly in view of making the most modern leading edge technologies available. Erich Nigg is convinced, that in the future, groundbreaking discoveries will continue to be made first and foremost by creative researchers and not by consortiums. However, successful research in a competitive environment is increasingly dependant on the implementation of specialized technologies (for example, mass spectrometry or innovative methods in light and electron microscopy) - hence his striving to promote an intensified collaboration and cooperation in «Life-Science» research in Basel.
