The New Media Center of the University of Basel has developed «Reverse.Forward», an online game that starts players on a thrilling time travel through the world of science.

Anne-Catherine cooks in a day nursery, and Dieter studies art history. Together they go hunting for a mysterious family jewel that, according to legend, promises knowledge. A thrilling scavenger hunt begins, which leads the two young protagonists through the history of science.

This is the beginning of «Reverse.Forward», an interactive science thriller taking place in present-day Basel that switches back and forth between the real world and the world of the internet and experiments with new media-related ways to transfer knowledge. The players have to uncover links that are hidden on the web pages, resolve problems and look for keys in real space to help the protagonists solve the puzzle.

The game is divided into six parts. Each part starts with a movie and refers to a different horizon of knowledge: from the knowledge of papermakers that was transferred from master to companion, to ideas about the cosmic order or anatomy, the science of body liquids, the encyclopedic system of knowledge and finally to the discovery of biology. The power of symbols and chance also play a role. The players are invited to think about questions that have occupied science, research and general knowledge over the centuries.

«Reverse.Forward» assumes that neither time nor knowledge are hermetically closed systems, but that each age has its own flexible knowledge. In this sense, the development of knowledge does not mean replacing something old with something new, but rather the elements that constitute knowledge change and enter into dialog in a new way without ever disappearing completely.

Since the beginning of the official University anniversary, the parts have been uploaded biweekly. Now all six parts are accessible. Players’ reactions are very positive.

«Reverse.Forward» has been developed at the New Media Center of the University of Basel under the direction of Dr. Thomas Lehmann. The New Media Center assists university-related institutes and projects in creating new teaching and learning material and offers professional facilities for video production and multimedia development.
