We study weapons bacterial pathogens use to neutralize the defense mechanisms of their host. In particular, we focus on type III secretion, a complex system which consists of a molecular syringe that allows bacteria to inject a cocktail of proteins into the cytosol of animal, plant or invertebrate target cells. These proteins generally interfere with the cytoskeleton dynamics and with signalling pathways. Bacteria from the genus Yersinia, including the agent of plague, are model systems for the study of type III secretion.
