Eurotransbio (ETB)

What is it?

Since 2006, ETB has established itself as the preferred funding instrument for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), collaborating in the area of modern biotechnology.

Who is concerned?

SMEs and in some cases academic research laboratories from 12 European countries or regions; among them: Alsace (France), and Germany (whole country).

Timelines?

ETB is launching annual calls for innovative research proposals. ETB operates under the ERA-NET scheme since 2004 and will develop to an international funding initiative in 2013. Also in the future, ETB will continue to launch annual calls.

Eureka (Eurostars)

What is it?

Eurostars is fostering R&D collaboration between European high-tech SMEs. Eurostars aims to stimulate these SMEs to lead international collaborative research and innovation projects by easing access to support and funding. It is fine-tuned to focus on the needs of SMEs, and specifically targets the development of new products, processes and services and the access to transnational and international markets.

Who is concerned?

SMEs as a project leader (at least 10% of their annual turnover spent in R&D and/or 10% of their employees involved in R&D projects)/ academic laboratories from at least 2 countries from a Eurostars country. Market introduction is foreseen within 2 years after project end!

Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI)

What is it?

IMI is a joint initiative between the European Commission and the European pharmaceutical industry association EFPIA. It is Europe’s largest public-private initiative aiming to speed up the development of better and safer medicines for patients.

Seventh Framework Programme (FP7)

What is it?

The main European program to support R&D at European level (2007-2013).
For each type of objective, there is a specific program corresponding to the main areas of EU research policy. All specific programs work together to promote and encourage the creation of European poles of (scientific) excellence. The broad objectives of FP7 have been grouped into four categories: Cooperation, People, Capacities and Ideas

Specific National Opportunities

Germany and Baden-Württemberg

  • There are differences between the individual federal states in terms of content and the instruments used for R&D funding. The target group of the technology funding programmes of the federal states is in particular innovative SMEs. As the state-wide service agency, BioRegio Freiburg provides targeted support to research institutions and companies in the biotechnology and life sciences sectors.

  • The program of the ANR (Agence Nationale de la Recherche) is the most renowned French co financing program for innovative R&D projects with numerous calls focused on academic research groups as well as on start ups

  • The program of the FUI (Fonds Unique Interministriels) finances collaborative R&D projects labeled by the non for profit structures « pôles de compétitivité » such as Alsace BioValley. The projects bringing together academic and industrial researchers are set up together with an officer from a Pole de compétitivité and are getting a label by an independent group of experts. As soon as a project is labeled the FUI can be asked for funding.
